Opera of sci-fi classic 'Solaris' creates strange world

Japanese choreographer Saburo Teshigawara poses at the Theatre des Champs-Elysees in Paris, on Febuary 19, 2015 To turn the science fiction classic "Solaris" into an opera, the Japanese composer Dai Fujikura and choreographer Saburo Teshigawara set out to create for the audience a world of strangeness. "Solaris," whose world premiere takes place Thursday at the Theatre des Champs-Elysees in Paris, is based on the celebrated novel of Polish writer Stanislas Lem about a planet covered entirely by ocean. The novel, a philosophical exploration on human intelligence and its limitations, has inspired numerous adaptations including a cult film by the Russian Andrei Tarkovsky and, more recently, by US director Steven Soderbergh.
