Environmental filmmakers have rare impact in China

In this Oct. 28, 2014 photo, independent film maker Wang Jiuliang talks about his new film "Plastic China" at his home in Yanjiao, northern China's Hebei province. Wang is editing his second film about waste harming China’s environment. He’s already in discussions to show it on the main state-run broadcaster. What’s unusual is that he’s an independent film maker intent on showing the ugly side of a country where independent filmmakers generally face censorship, harassment or worse. But while environmental filmmakers face harassment at the local level, their work is being tolerated nationally because it aligns with the central government’s new priority of combatting pollution.
