NYC subway performers eke out a living

In this Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2013, photo, subway riders pause to listen as Jeffrey Masin, right, performs his one-man band ensemble at a subway platform at Union Square station in New York. Masin, from Waterford, Conn., has performed his one-man band show he calls "Jumping Jam Band" since 1979, traveling across the U.S. and Europe. A street musician mostly, he started performing legally at subway stations more than a year ago and it's been "very good." (AP Photo/Bebeto Matthews) NEW YORK (AP) — To many, the real soundtrack of New York City plays out well below the street cacophony of rumbling traffic and honking horns, in the subways, where screeching trains combine with the drumming, strumming and singing of hundreds of performers.
