Thai soaps trigger outcry over romanticizing rape

In this Sept. 26, 2014 photo, Thai actress Pimthong Washirakom poses after an interview in Bangkok, Thailand. Up-and-coming starlet Pimthong's debut role as a dangerously beautiful "bad girl" who gets raped in the soap "The Rising Sun" aired last month. Pimthong said that filming of the scene, in which a police detective locks her in his office and rapes her, took place after the girl's rape on the train in July. As the cameras rolled, she broke down in tears. A recent real-life rape and murder of a 13-year-old girl on an overnight train in Thailand has focused national outrage on Thai popular culture, and particularly TV soaps for sending messages that trivialize - and some say encourage - rape. He later begs her forgiveness, and the producers say they will live happily ever after in the sequel.
