Stars are safer because of actress' murder

** FILE ** In this 1987 file image, Rebecca Schaeffer, who played Patti on CBS TV's "My Sister Sam," poses in a publicity photo. The model-actress was murdered on July 19, 1989, when an obsessed fan named Robert Bardo shot and killed her at the door of her Los Angeles apartment. Schaeffer’s death prompted reforms that made stalking a crime, prevented the Department of Motor Vehicles from releasing home addresses, and the creation of a specialized police unit to protect celebrities and dignitaries.
