Fania Records celebrates 50th anniversary

FILE - In this June 20, 2008, file photo, Cheo Feliciano performs at The Theater at Madison Square Garden, in New York. Fania Records, Feliciano's label, is celebrating 50 years. It was founded in New York in 1964 by lawyer Jerry Masucci and band leader Johnny Pacheco, and promoted new Hispanic talents and focused on the quality of the music, not record sales. Feliciano, 78, died in a car accident April 17, 2014, in the U.S. territory. (AP Photo/Frank Franklin II, File) A group of Latin musicians gave an historic concert at Yankee Stadium in the summer of 1973. About 40,000 fans danced to the beat of a genre that had a different flavor to the Sones, Guarachas and other Cuban rhythms of the era. It was called "salsa."
