Czech filmmaker Vera Chytilova dies at 85

Czech film director Vera Chytilova, one of the leading filmmakers of the new wave of the Czechoslovak cinema of the 1960s has died.The Czech public radio and television say Chytilova died Wednesday March 12, 2014 in Prague. She was 85. For last several years, Chytilova was battling an unspecified illness. Chytilova’s highly acclaimed farcical comedy “Daisies” from 1966 represented a radical departure from the socialist realism, a typical communist-era filmmaking focusing on the working class. It was immediately banned before winning the Grand Prix at the Bergamo Film Festival in Italy in 1967.
