AP Interview: new Polish movie honors Lech Walesa

HOLD FOR STORY BY MONIKA SCISLOWSKA - In this Aug. 13, 2013, photo, Poland’s Oscar-winning filmmaker Andrzej Wajda speaks during an interview with The Associated Press in Warsaw, Poland, about his latest film “Walesa: Man of Hope.” In the film, Wajda portrays the rise to national hero status of Solidarity founder, electrician Lech Walesa, whose charisma helped him lead a massive worker strike and successfully negotiate concessions from Poland’s communist leaders in 1980, and negotiate Solidarity’s access to power in 1989. Wajda said that the movie, which has its world premiere next month at the 70th Venice Film Festival, was the hardest he ever made, because the hero is still living and free to comment on his portrayal. Oscar-winning filmmaker Andrzej Wajda says he wants to restore his longtime friend as Poland's hero in his latest movie — which he calls the hardest of his life.
